How to Win in Las Vegas

You probably want to stay in Monticello. This city is much smaller than Moab, more like Green River, with a reasonable choice of hotels and restaurants. Be sure to ask directions to the Mormon church a few blocks from the main road, but well worth the worth the detour.

Leaving Green River or Moab, 9 am, must arrive before noon, in Monticello. The southern entrance to Canyonlands is several miles before that arrive at Monticello, so you might want to spend hours on the first park. This will be a decision point. You can now eastward about 130 miles from Mesa Green, with spectacular scenery and the remains of Indian cliff dwellings. Or you can go south in the valley of time, the Petrified Forest and Painted Desert.

However, if they are starting to doubt that what you saw in Bryce Canyon was real (I've seen seven times and I still have doubts), you can take Highway 95 toward Beck capital Reef. Highway 95 is just as interesting and photogenic as Highway 24 between capital and Green River Reef.

After leaving Bryce Canyon a second time, you may be looking for an interesting, low-cost R & R (rest and relaxation). Stop in Mesquite. This is the last oasis of gambling in Nevada before crossing into Arizona and Utah. Being a small city (but rapidly growing), Mesquite has only a handful of hotels in Gran Casino, which rival so many in Las Vegas at half the price.

As you head down the I-15 to LV back, swing out from 2-3 pm in the Valley of Fire, a state park Nevada is worth the detour.

Another possibility. If time allows, take I-15 to the line through VI Laughlin, about 1 ½ hours south. Laughlin is the last oasis of gambling in southern Nevada border. There are several advantages to spending a couple of days there.
